With the December 1 deadline fast approaching for city staff and PSU to present detailed costs and a funding plan for the proposal to build a new Broadway theater at PSU and renovate the Keller as a smaller theater, I am writing to urge you to consider a more affordable, practical alternative – The Keller Affordable Fix. Metro has identified a five-year, $15 to $20 million plan of improvements that can be implemented without a prolonged closure of the Keller, which would impact workers and shows.

At the recent council hearing on the City-PSU theater plan, it was very clear the city has no money to fund this expensive proposal. If PSU wants to build a new theater on campus for their arts programs, they should assume the financial responsibilities and risks. It’s not necessary to entangle and commit city government and taxpayers to building a new Broadway theater – isolated and away from the heart of downtown.

Please support The Keller by investing in an affordable improvement plan. It’s the best way to support Portland’s arts economy, invest in downtown revitalization, and responsibly manage city assets and taxpayer dollars. Thank you.
